Tied knot by knot over four weeks, this multicolour Moroccan rug carries no single motif, no central symbol, no border — only a dense, hand-knotted pile of individually coloured wool knots scattered across the field like a meadow seen from above. Made in Taznakht, Morocco, in the Anti-Atlas foothills, by Amazigh women artisans, it is 100% natural sheep's wool, naturally dyed. Coral pink, cobalt blue, amber ochre, madder red, olive green, cream, dark brown, and natural gray — each knot its own colour, each row slightly different from the last. From a distance the field reads as warm and tonal. Up close, it resolves into hundreds of individual decisions. It is the only one of its kind in the world.
Meaning & Symbolism
This rug carries no single symbol — and that is its meaning. In some Amazigh weaving traditions, the scatter of colour is itself the blessing: abundance, joy, and the refusal to leave anything out. Every colour in this rug comes from one of two sources: a plant-based pigment dissolved in a copper pot, or the natural colour of the wool itself, straight from the sheep. Nothing is bought as a ready-made colour.
The deep red, olive, and navy tones are not separate dyes — they are made by layering and over-dyeing the three base pigments by hand.
The cream and warm gray tones are not dyed at all — they come straight from the natural colour of the wool, sheared from different sheep.
