Horizontal bands. Abstract geometry. A spectrum of colour for your home.
Weeks of work. The hands of Moroccan women artisans. One loom. One rug — never to be repeated.
Handwoven in Taznakht, in the Anti-Atlas foothills of southern Morocco, this flatweave kilim is built from 100% natural sheep's wool dyed with plant-based pigments in a copper pot. Its composition — bold horizontal bands of navy, saffron yellow, warm brown, grey, red, sky blue, and orange, interrupted by an abstract mirrored zigzag field at the centre — is entirely the artisan's own invention. No pattern book, no copy. The wool is naturally coloured without harsh chemical dyes, giving each band a grounded, lived-in tone that no factory process can replicate. Measuring 59 × 39 in (150 × 99 cm), it is the only one of its kind in the world.
Meaning & Symbolism
Entirely imagined and handwoven by the artisan, this rug celebrates joy, creativity, and the full spectrum of Moroccan weaving heritage. The horizontal band structure — one of the oldest compositions in Amazigh textile tradition — represents the layers of life: earth below, sky above, family in between. Each colour stripe is a chapter; together they read like a complete story of a place and its people.
The central abstract field, where diagonal lines in every colour dissolve the hard edges of the bands, reflects the Amazigh value of harmony between opposites. The navy and black carry protection and depth. The saffron yellow and warm orange speak of warmth, welcome, and the generosity of the Moroccan sun. Red anchors strength and life; sky blue brings calm and clarity; grey and brown ground everything in the earth itself.
The result is not only decoration, but a handmade object shaped by patience, memory, and daily use.
The Texture of This Rug
This rug carries no single pictorial symbol — its vocabulary is colour, rhythm, and the physical quality of the weave itself. Each structural element below is a real feature of this piece.
Color from the Earth
Every colour in this rug comes from one of two sources: a plant-based pigment dissolved in a copper pot, or the natural colour of the wool itself, straight from the sheep. Nothing is bought as a ready-made colour.
The orange, sky blue, and warm brown are not separate dyes — they are made by layering and over-dyeing the three base pigments by hand.
The grey and cream tones are not dyed at all — they come straight from the natural colour of the wool, sheared from different sheep.
