Red trellis. Indigo medallions. A blessing woven step by step.
Five weeks of work. The hands of Amazigh women. One loom. One runner — never to be repeated.
Handwoven on a natural ivory field, this Moroccan runner was made in Taznakht, in the Anti-Atlas foothills of southern Morocco, by skilled women artisans over roughly five weeks — knotted and flat-woven in a single surface, never to be copied. The wool is 100% natural sheep's wool, dyed with plant-based pigments: madder root for the deep reds, natural indigo for the blue accents, and left undyed for the cream ground. Its most distinctive feature is the mixed knotted and flat-woven construction — raised pile motifs float above a low, tightly woven base. Measuring 26 × 87 in (66 × 221 cm), it is the only one of its kind in the world.
Meaning & Symbolism
The diamond lattice trellis that runs the length of this runner is one of the oldest symbols in Amazigh weaving. In the Taznakht tradition, connected diamonds drawn in an open grid speak of continuous protection — a net of safe passage laid down for everyone who walks that path. The small jewel shapes at each crossing point carry the additional meaning of abundance, one small blessing at every junction.
The square medallions in indigo and mauve anchor the centre of the composition. In Amazigh textile language, a filled square represents the household — its four sides the four walls of home. The X-cross motifs scattered through the field are markers of balance, each arm pointing outward to ward off disruption from every direction. The small Tifinagh-like glyphs in green are the artisan's personal mark — a quiet signature woven in the language her ancestors carved into stone.
Red carries the energy of life and strength; blue brings calm and protection into the home; the natural cream ground is honesty itself — undisguised, undyed, exactly as it came from the sheep. The result is not only decoration, but a handmade object shaped by patience, memory, and daily use.
The Symbols on This Rug
Each motif carries meaning in Amazigh weaving — together they read like a quiet blessing laid underfoot for every step you take.
Color from the Earth
Every colour in this rug comes from one of two sources: a plant-based pigment dissolved in a copper pot, or the natural colour of the wool itself, straight from the sheep. Nothing is bought as a ready-made colour.
The moss green is not a separate dye — it is made by layering yellow and indigo over-dyed by hand.
The ivory ground and the dark border are not dyed at all — they come straight from the natural colour of the wool, sheared from different sheep.
Perfect Spaces
At 26 × 87 in (66 × 221 cm), this runner works beautifully wherever a long, narrow handmade textile can anchor and warm a space.
The runner shape brings handmade texture and warmth to long passages — the geometric motifs line every step with meaning.
A welcoming first layer with Moroccan character and durable wool — the red trellis greets every arrival.
A low-profile wool accent that softens a practical working space, adding colour and cushion underfoot without crowding the room.
A narrow, comfortable textile underfoot beside the bed — the cream field and geometric motifs bring quiet warmth to a morning routine.
Displayed vertically, the full programme of motifs can be appreciated as woven textile art — a gallery piece with centuries of meaning behind it.
May this runner guide your steps with happiness and harmony. May the diamonds keep your path protected, and may every step you walk bring comfort and positive energy into your home. — The Artisan's Blessing
