Eye motifs. Rhombus diamonds. A blessing woven into every knot.
Three weeks of work. The hands of Moroccan women artisans. One loom. One small rug — never to be repeated.
Handwoven in Morocco from 100% natural sheep's wool, this small flatweave rug carries a palette of deep madder red, natural black, and undyed cream — colours pulled from plant and fleece, never a factory pot. Moroccan women artisans worked the warp and weft over roughly three weeks, building up the dense geometric bands and interlocking eye-and-rhombus field that give the piece its clear visual character. The construction is flatweave throughout: tight, even, reversible, with the kind of firm hand that only comes from patient work at a hand-strung loom. It is the only one of its kind in the world.
Meaning & Symbolism
Woven entirely from the artisan's imagination, this rug is truly one-of-a-kind. Its design centres on repeated rhombus-shaped "eye" motifs — the dominant symbol running across the field. In Amazigh culture the eye is a protective sign: it watches, it deflects harm, it keeps the household safe. Placed in repeating rows, the motif becomes a continuous shield woven directly into the floor.
The diamond and rhombus geometry that frames each eye carries its own meaning. Diamonds speak of balance and order — the four directions held in equilibrium. Together, eye and diamond read like a quiet double protection: one watches outward, one holds the structure inward. The black-and-white lattice bands that stripe the field are not merely decorative; they mark boundaries, separating each register of meaning the way a spoken blessing pauses between lines.
The deep madder red anchors the piece with strength and vitality — the colour of life itself in Amazigh weaving. Natural black brings seriousness and grounding; undyed cream speaks of honesty and the clarity of unaltered wool. Together they form a palette that is visually specific and materially honest. The result is not only decoration, but a handmade object shaped by patience, memory, and daily use.
The Symbols on This Rug
Each motif carries meaning in Amazigh weaving — together they read like a quiet blessing for your home.
Color from the Earth
Every colour in this rug comes from one of two sources: a plant-based pigment dissolved in a copper pot, or the natural colour of the wool itself, straight from the sheep. Nothing is bought as a ready-made colour.
The warm orange accent threads are not a separate dye — they are made by layering yellow and red base pigments by hand, fired at different temperatures to shift the tone.
The black and cream tones are not dyed at all — they come straight from the natural colour of the wool, sheared from different sheep.
Perfect Spaces
At 39 × 23 in (99 × 58 cm), this rug works beautifully in compact, intentional spaces where a small layer of warmth makes the biggest difference.
A welcoming detail that introduces the home with Moroccan character — the eye motif meets every guest at the door.
A tactile layer that makes a quiet corner feel warmer and more personal — the dense flatweave holds well underfoot and invites you to stay.
The bold geometric bands and eye-field read clearly at distance — hang it as cultural textile art and it holds the wall with confidence.
A compact layer of colour, softness, and handmade presence — its small scale means it fits exactly where a larger rug cannot.
Small scale and soft wool make it easy to place beside a bed — the first thing your feet touch in the morning, woven by hand in Morocco.
May your home be protected from harm, and may peace dwell within its walls — may the eyes woven here watch over every threshold. — The Artisan's Blessing
