Blocks of pile lifted clear of a flat woven ground. No second colour anywhere in it. The shapes change as the light moves across the room.
Sand runs across the whole rug, and still nothing about it reads as plain. The pattern is made of height: thick blocks of pile standing above the ground beneath them, each one carrying its own shadow along the edge. No second colour appears anywhere. Bring it near a window and the shapes sharpen. Move it away and they soften.
That effect takes two techniques on one warp, and the thick wool pile that Beni Ourain rugs are known for is what makes the raised shapes hold their form. The ground is woven flat, tight and low, while the blocks are knotted in raised pile and then cut back so their corners stand square rather than blurring. The weaver holds both structures in the same rows, changing from one to the other shape by shape, across eight weeks at the loom.
None of the blocks repeat in a regular grid. Their sizes and the gaps between them shift across the whole field, which is why the surface keeps giving you something new to look at from different sides of the room. At both ends the warp is knotted by hand into a cream fringe, paler than the wool it finishes, and the pile sits directly on the warp with no backing glued underneath.

The Colour of This Rug
One tone carries the entire rug, so the colour has to work at three different depths at once. The same wool looks warmer on top of a block, paler across the flat ground, and darker in the narrow line where a block falls away.
