Madder pink field. Thirty symbols. A full life in wool.
Four weeks of work. The hands of Amazigh women. One loom. One rug — never to be repeated.
Handwoven by Amazigh women artisans in Taznakht, Morocco, this soft pink Moroccan rug measures 160 × 99 cm and is built from 100% natural wool. Its ground — a warm, dusty rose — is wool dyed with a single light dip of madder root, which at low concentration gives pink rather than red. Across that open field, dozens of individual symbols are built up as raised knotted pile islands sitting proud of the flat surface: a large cross form in red and black, eight-point starbursts, stepped pyramid shapes, scattered diamond clusters, bird and wing forms, chevron arrows, checker squares, elongated feather shapes, and circular mandala forms. The symbols are placed freely, without a repeating grid — each one positioned by the artisan from memory, the field filling outward as she worked. Woven over four weeks, it is the only one of its kind in the world.
Meaning & Symbolism
In the Amazigh weaving tradition, pink is an unusual and deliberate choice. It comes from the same madder root that makes deep red — but dipped once, lightly, so the colour lands soft rather than saturated. The Amazigh women who work with this plant understand its range intuitively. A pink ground carries the warmth and protective power of red held at a quieter register: warmth, love, and the gentleness of a home that is both alive and safe.
The cross and X forms scattered across the field — some large and central, some small and scattered — guard all four directions, a consistent protective gesture in Amazigh textile grammar. The starburst forms carry guidance and good fortune. The scattered diamond clusters, each tiny but precise, are a form of distributed protection: small guardians placed across the full surface so no corner goes unwatched. The bird and wing forms carry movement and the passage of good things — messengers between the home and the wider world.
The result is not only decoration, but a handmade object shaped by patience, memory, and daily use.
The Symbols on This Rug
Each motif was placed from memory across the pink field — a full vocabulary of Amazigh protective symbol distributed freely, without a template.
Color from the Earth
Every colour in this rug comes from plant pigment or natural fleece. The soft pink ground comes from madder root at a single light dip — the same plant that makes the deep crimson in the motifs, held back to land as rose rather than red. Every other colour on the rug comes from the same dye pot tradition or straight from the sheep.
The olive green and dark brown are made by layering the base pigments — olive from yellow and indigo, brown from red and yellow, deeper dipped.
The ivory and black and grey tones in the motifs are not dyed — they come from natural fleece of different-coloured sheep.
Perfect Spaces
At 63 × 39 in (160 × 99 cm), this rug works beautifully in warm, personal spaces where a soft ground and a full field of colour and symbol earn their place.
A warm, grounding centrepiece that anchors a seating area with a soft pink field and a full vocabulary of Amazigh symbol and colour.

A tactile, richly symbolic layer that makes a quiet corner feel warmer and more personal — every visit reveals a new motif to notice.
Natural wool and a warm, softly coloured ground bring creativity and calm to a focused work area without visual noise.
The scattered symbol field and soft pink ground make this rug as striking displayed vertically as underfoot — a cultural textile worth hanging.
