Handwoven across a deep indigo field, this flatweave Moroccan rug was made by skilled women artisans in Morocco using 100% natural wool. Its surface is divided into eight panels by slender ochre lines — each panel holding its own constellation of symbols: branching tree-of-life forms, cross motifs, diamond lattices, and clustered geometric stars. Woven over nearly five weeks, the colour was fixed with natural indigo and layered plant pigments, yielding a palette of navy, red, orange, olive, and cream that sits with quiet authority on any floor. Every irregularity in the weave reflects human hands, natural materials, and time. It is the only one of its kind in the world.
Meaning & Symbolism
Entirely imagined and woven by the artisan, this rug arranges its symbols like a quiet map of protection. The branching tree-of-life forms in the top panels — tall, forked, rooted at a crossbar — are among the oldest motifs in Amazigh weaving. They speak of lineage, growth, and the connection between what is planted and what is passed on. Each arm of the tree reaches outward; each root holds the family in place.
The cross and plus motifs dispersed across the surface carry a blessing in every direction — north, south, east, west — while the diamond lattice fills and geometric lozenges in the mid-panels speak of continuous protection, one family woven into the next. The clustered flower-star forms at the base suggest fertility and abundance, the fullness of a home that is lived in and loved.
Navy blue is the colour of calm and protection in Amazigh tradition — a shield laid underfoot. Red speaks of strength and the vitality of daily life. Gold and ochre carry warmth and welcome; olive and green, growth from the land. Every colour in this rug comes from one of two sources: a plant-based pigment dissolved in a copper pot, or the natural colour of the wool itself, straight from the sheep. Nothing is bought as a ready-made colour.
The olive green and burnt orange are not separate dyes — they are made by layering and over-dyeing the three base pigments by hand.
The natural cream used for the zigzag borders and cross outlines is not dyed at all — it comes straight from the natural colour of the wool, sheared from different sheep.
