A field of navy. A red diamond at the centre. A blessing for your home.
Five weeks of work. One artisan. One loom. One rug — never to be repeated.
This handwoven blue kilim Moroccan rug was made by Moroccan women artisans, working on a vertical loom over roughly five weeks of patient work — thread by thread, never copied, never repeated. The flatweave is built entirely from 100% natural wool, hand-spun and naturally dyed with madder root, natural indigo, pomegranate peel and henna. Across the deep navy field, a single red rhombus sits at the centre, framed by small green panels, orange standing figures, and a soft ivory border. Every irregularity in the weave is the trace of a human hand. It is the only one of its kind in the world.
Meaning & Symbolism
The red diamond at the centre of this rug is its heart. In Amazigh weaving, the diamond — or rhombus — is one of the oldest protective signs, a symbol of balance, prosperity, and the watchful eye that keeps the home safe. The artisan placed it at the very middle of the field on purpose: everything else in the rug radiates outward from this single mark.
Around it move smaller forms with their own quiet meaning. The green framed panels are read as fertile ground — wishes for growth and abundance. The orange standing figures scattered across the field are small guardians watching the corners, and the ivory toothed border running along the edges forms the rug's outer protection — a soft fence meant to turn away the evil eye.
Read together, this is a rug about a protected centre and a watched border — a handmade object shaped by patience, memory, and daily use.
The Symbols on This Rug
Each motif carries meaning in Amazigh weaving — together they read like a quiet blessing for your home.
Color from the Earth
Every color in this rug comes from one of two sources: a traditional pigment dissolved in a copper pot, or the natural color of the wool itself, straight from the sheep. Nothing is bought as a ready-made color.
The green panels are made by over-dyeing pomegranate yellow with indigo — two pigments married in the dye pot to produce a single living green.
The cream and ivory threads in the toothed border and motif outlines are not dyed at all — they come straight from the natural color of light-fleeced sheep.
