The Story of This Rug

Diamonds, stripes, and circles. A painter's palette. A blessing for your home.

Seven weeks of work. The hands of Amazigh women. One loom. One kilim — never to be repeated.

Woven flat on a single loom in Taznakht, Morocco, in the foothills of the Anti-Atlas mountains, this kilim is built entirely from 100% natural sheep's wool — dyed by hand over roughly four weeks using plant-based pigments and set in a copper pot. Every band of colour — the deep reds, burnt oranges, olive greens, charcoal blacks, and pale creams — was planned not on paper but carried in the memory of the weaver. No pattern was drawn. No template was followed. The result is a flatweave reversible kilim, the same artisan design readable from either side, rich with geometric motifs that shift across the surface like a painted canvas. It is the only one of its kind in the world.

Meaning & Symbolism

In Amazigh weaving, geometric shapes are not decoration — they are language. The diamond forms scattered across this kilim carry one of the oldest meanings in Berber textile tradition: protection of the family and the home. When diamonds appear in rows, as they do here, they are understood as a continuous shield — each one linking the next, forming an unbroken line of care.

The cross and star motifs on the orange bands speak to blessing from every direction — north, south, east, west — a four-point prayer woven into the weave. The circular forms on the deeper red and burgundy ground carry the idea of wholeness, of cycles completing themselves, of generations passing knowledge forward. Together, these three motifs — diamond, cross-star, circle — form a quiet vocabulary that has been spoken in wool for centuries across the High Atlas.

Red carries strength and the vitality of life. Orange signals warmth and welcome, the colour of fire in a hearth. Olive green speaks to the land — to growth, to patience, to what endures. Black and cream, woven in from the natural fleece itself, hold the balance of light and dark that every Amazigh household understood as the structure of daily life. The result is not only decoration, but a handmade object shaped by patience, memory, and daily use.

Color from the Earth

Every colour in this rug comes from one of two sources: a plant-based pigment dissolved in a copper pot, or the natural colour of the wool itself, straight from the sheep. Nothing is bought as a ready-made colour.

The pigments — from root, stone & peel

Deep Red
from madder root

Burnt Orange
yellow + red, layered

Golden Yellow
from pomegranate peel

Mixed by hand to make more

The olive green and deep burgundy are not separate dyes — they are made by layering and over-dyeing the three base pigments by hand.

Olive Green
yellow + indigo, over-dyed

Deep Burgundy
red + indigo, double-dipped

From the sheep, not the dye pot

The charcoal black and natural cream are not dyed at all — they come straight from the natural colour of the wool, sheared from different sheep.

Natural Black
from dark-fleeced sheep

Natural Cream
from light-fleeced sheep
Perfect Spaces

At 41 × 71 in (104 × 180 cm), this kilim works beautifully as a grounding layer in rooms that deserve a bold, handmade centrepiece — or displayed vertically as textile art.

Living Room

A warm, grounding centrepiece that anchors a seating area with handmade texture and a full spectrum of colour.

Bedroom

Soft wool underfoot and natural colour make the room feel calm and settled — grounded by something made slowly, by hand.

Reading Nook

A tactile layer that makes a quiet corner feel warmer and more personal — the kind of rug that rewards slow attention.

Wall Décor

Hung vertically, the woven geometry reads as cultural textile art — every motif visible, every colour earning its place on a bare wall.

Cozy Corner

A compact layer of colour, softness, and handmade presence — enough to make any overlooked corner feel intentional.

May this rug bring warmth, joy, and protection into your home. May every diamond keep your family close, and every thread carry the care, patience, and spirit of Taznakht to you and your loved ones. — The Artisan's Blessing

Frequently asked questions

Will my rug shed?

A small amount of shedding is normal for the first 2–3 weeks with any handwoven Moroccan rug — these are loose fibers from the weaving process settling out. After that, gentle weekly vacuuming on low power keeps the rug looking new for decades. Avoid rotating beater-brush vacuums on natural wool — use suction only. For deeper care instructions, see our complete wool rug care guide

How do I know my rug is truly handmade?

Every TazRugs piece ships with a signed certificate of authenticity from the Iznaguen Women's Cooperative in Taznakht, naming the artisan who wove it. We're also certified by the Moroccan Artisan Label (a government-backed authenticity guarantee) and STEP Fair Trade (independent verification of ethical labor). Authentic handmade rugs also have small irregularities — slightly uneven edges, tiny knot variations, color shifts in the dye. If yours looks perfectly uniform, it isn't handmade. Learn more in our guide to spotting a real handwoven Moroccan rug.

How long does shipping take from Morocco?

5 to 10 business days worldwide via DHL, FedEx, or Aramex with full tracking. We ship from Casablanca and deliver to the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and most other countries. Shipping is free, and we handle all customs duties for the US, UK, and EU — no surprise fees at delivery. Full details on our shipping and returns page

How do I clean and care for my rug?

Unroll immediately upon arrival : to avoid creases from shipping. Any slight folds will naturally relax over time — don’t worry.
Vacuum regularly : on low power and avoid rotating brushes. Some wool shedding during the first few days is completely normal.
Spot clean spills immediately : using cold water and a mild detergent.
Natural refresh : Sprinkle a mix of baking soda and coarse salt, leave for 1–2 hours, then vacuum thoroughly.
Professional cleaning : Recommended every 2–3 years or for deeper soiling.
Storage : Fold carefully and place in a breathable cover with a sachet of dried lavender.
Air it out occasionally : Light sun exposure on sunny days helps keep your rug fresh.

For the full step-by-step routine, see our handwoven wool care guide.

Are the colors exactly as shown in the photos?

Very close, but slight variation is part of the craft. Every dye is mixed by hand in copper pots in Morocco using traditional Amazigh techniques, and every screen renders color slightly differently. Photos are taken in natural daylight to keep them as honest as possible. If you'd like extra detail photos before you order, message us — we're happy to share more.

Is the rug safe for kids and pets?

Yes. The wool is hand-spun from Atlas Mountain sheep, the dyes are plant and mineral-based, and there are no chemical treatments anywhere in the rug. Natural wool is also flame-resistant and stain-resistant thanks to its natural lanolin — making it one of the safest floor coverings for children and animals. This applies to all our pieces, including soft Beni Ourain rugs for nurseries and durable rugs flatweave kilims for high-traffic rooms.

Is it truly one-of-a-kind?

Yes — every rug is designed and woven by a single Amazigh artisan, entirely from her own imagination. No pattern or paper guide is used; each piece is a personal expression of the weaver’s story, emotions, and creativity.

Once a rug is sold, that exact piece can never truly be reproduced. Even with a custom order, there will always be slight differences, because every handmade rug carries its own unique soul

Can I order a custom size or color?

Yes. Our weavers can make a custom version of any rug in your preferred size, color palette, or motif arrangement. Visit our Made-to-Order page to start the process — we'll come back to you within 48 hours with a quote and timeline (custom rugs typically take 4–8 weeks to weave, depending on size). A handwoven Moroccan rug, made the traditional way: natural wool, plant-based dyes, and weeks of skilled work by a single artisan.

This handwoven Moroccan rug comes from Taznakht, a region in Morocco renowned for its traditional Amazigh rug weaving heritage, shared with neighboring Beni Ourain and Azilal regions. For generations, women artisans have transformed natural wool into beautiful handmade Taznakht rugs, runners, and kilims using techniques passed down from mother to daughter.

Each rug is imagined and designed freely by the artisan, inspired by her creativity, life experiences, and Amazigh cultural symbols. No patterns are copied, which makes every piece — whether a small Moroccan rug, a runner, or a large area rug — truly unique.

The wool is naturally dyed using traditional plant-based dyes, a centuries-old practice that gives Moroccan rugs their rich, organic colors while remaining eco-friendly and chemical-free.

Every authentic Moroccan artisan rug takes weeks to complete and carries the story, imagination, patience, and heritage of the woman who created it. We also offer custom Moroccan rugs made to order, woven specifically for your home.
