A Beni Mrirt style rug in warm caramel wool, hand-knotted in Morocco with a medium pile broken by lines of flatweave. The whole surface is one tone, so the only pattern is structural: where the pile stops and the flat weaving runs across it. Available in any size or colour you need.

The Story of This Rug

One colour, two weaves. The only pattern here is where the pile stops and the flat weaving runs.

Three weavers. One loom. One tone of wool. Two weaves in the same field, changed by hand as the rug grew.

Warm caramel runs across the whole field, with no pattern to read and no border to hold it in. The colour changes as you move: lighter where the pile leans towards the window, deeper where it leans away. Nothing here is printed or applied. What you see is wool, worked two different ways on the same warp.

One colour is what makes the structure visible. The knots sit close together and the pile is kept at a medium depth, dense underfoot but never shaggy, so the surface holds its shape instead of flattening into tracks. Then, at intervals, the weaver drops the knots and works a band of flatweave straight across, so a low line cuts through the pile and catches the light differently from the wool on either side of it.

The wool sits directly on the warp, with no backing glued underneath and nothing to peel away later. The warp ends are knotted by hand into a cream fringe, left in their own colour against the caramel. Turn a corner over and the reverse shows the same fine ribbed structure, built row by row by the three women who sat side by side at the loom.

The Texture of This Rug

With no motifs to look at, three structural things carry the rug.

Medium Pile
Soft to stand on, low enough for doors and chair legs to clear it.
Flatweave Lines
Low bands worked flat across the field, dividing the pile.
Cream Fringe
Warp ends tied by hand and left undyed at the finish.
Meaning & Symbolism

The meaning of colour varies between regions, families, and weaving traditions, and no single reading holds across all of them. Here, the caramel was chosen for warmth: a tone close to earth, wool, and late afternoon light, one that settles a room instead of competing with what is already in it.

Our wish is that it brings you calm, health for the people you love, and a quiet kind of strength in the room where you put it. May it take the weight of ordinary days: bare feet in the morning, people sitting on the floor, a house that gets used. The result is not only decoration, but a handmade object shaped by patience, memory, and daily use.

The Colour of This Rug

One tone carries the entire rug, so the colour has to hold up from every angle. Between the pile and the flatweave lines it never reads as flat: the same wool looks like three different shades depending on where you stand and where the light falls.

At 250 by 200 cm this is a room-anchoring size rather than an accent piece. A few places it works well:

Living Room

Sits under a three-seat sofa with the front legs on, and still leaves room for a coffee table without the edges disappearing under furniture.

Bedroom

Laid across the lower two thirds of a double bed, so the pile is what you step onto from either side in the morning.

Dining Room

Chairs stay on the wool when pulled back from a four-seat table. The medium height means legs slide without catching, and crumbs shake out more easily than they would from a longer pile.

Reading Corner

One armchair, a lamp, a low shelf. The plain field marks out the corner without a border doing the work.

These beautiful details are part of what makes a handwoven rug unique. No two pieces are exactly alike.
Once your rug is finished, we share final photos, close-up images, and a video so you can see its colour, texture, pile, and finishing clearly before it leaves Morocco.

Tracked shipping is included. Delivery times vary by destination, and DDP is available in selected countries.

As each rug is woven to order, returns and exchanges are not accepted. Please review your measurements, colour direction, and design carefully before placing your order.

Our roots in Taznakht

TazRugs is rooted in the Iznaguen Women’s Cooperative in Taznakht. We also work with carefully selected women-led cooperatives across Morocco, matching each commission to the cooperative and weaver whose knowledge best suits its technique, texture, and design.
