About TazRugs
Meet the women behind TazRugs.
A story rooted in Taznakht, shaped by my mother, Sfia, and the women I grew up with.
Iznaguen Women’s Cooperative · Taznakht, Morocco

The beginning · Taznakht, 2009
She knew the work was worth more.
At eight years old, Sfia Iminotras learned to weave. She knew what the work demanded: long hours at the loom, skill built over decades, and the frustration of seeing so little of its value reach the women who made it.
In 2009, she brought 63 women from the villages around Taznakht together and founded the Iznaguen Women’s Cooperative. She wanted them to work collectively, be paid fairly and directly, and have more control over the value of what they created.
Sfia still leads the cooperative today. TazRugs grew from that same conviction: that the distance between the women who make a rug and the person who lives with it should be smaller.
Ihssane / Founder of TazRugs
I chose to carry the craft forward.
My name is Ihssane. I grew up with the sound of the loom and among the women who made weaving part of our everyday life.
My mother’s weaving paid for my education. It gave me more than a future; it gave me a deep connection to a craft I truly love.
That connection became TazRugs. I work with the Iznaguen Women’s Cooperative and, when a project calls for another regional tradition, with other women-led cooperatives across Morocco. The aim is simple: bring Moroccan weaving closer to homes around the world while keeping the women behind it visible.
From that place, every TazRugs commission takes shape.

Inside the cooperative
In Sfia’s own words.

Across Morocco
Rooted in one cooperative. Connected to many traditions.
Our roots remain in Iznaguen. As TazRugs grows, we also work with carefully selected women-led cooperatives across Morocco when a commission calls for another regional tradition or a particular kind of weaving. Each carries knowledge shaped by place, practice and generations of women.
Every collaboration is chosen with care. We match each commission with the women whose experience is right for the work, and keep their connection to the rug visible from the first conversation to the finished piece.
Wherever it is woven, every rug remains connected to the women who made it.

From your direction to the loom
A commission begins together.
Sfia brings each client’s wishes to the women. Together, they prepare the wool before the rug begins to take shape.
The Iznaguen Women’s Cooperative was founded in Taznakht.
Sfia brought 63 women from the surrounding villages together.
When Sfia joined them, the circle became 64 women strong.
The beginning / Taznakht, Morocco
It began with Sfia.
In Taznakht, weaving has always been part of daily life—knowledge carried from one generation to the next through practice, memory and hands.
In 2009, Sfia Iminotras gathered women from the villages around her and founded the Iznaguen Women’s Cooperative. It gave them a place to work together, to be recognised for their skill and to share their work with people beyond their region.
That cooperative remains at the heart of TazRugs today. The name may travel further now, but the story still begins in the same place: with the women who know the work from the inside.

Sfia Iminotras / Founder & President
She made room for others.
Sfia learned to weave as a child. Decades later, she is still close to the work, the women and the standards she has spent a lifetime building.
Her leadership is not separate from the craft. It lives in the way the cooperative works together, in the care given to each rug and in the belief that the women behind the work should be known.

The next generation
A daughter’s way of carrying it forward.
I am Sfia’s daughter. I grew up around the loom, the cooperative and the women whose knowledge shaped my life.
The cooperative was never a story I discovered later. It was part of home: the voices, the work and the quiet concentration that filled the room.
I created TazRugs to make the distance between a customer and the women who weave smaller. I listen to the idea, help shape the commission and keep the connection present while the rug is being made.
For me, this is not about placing a label on an old tradition. It is about giving its makers a wider audience while respecting what already exists.

The people behind the name
The work continues through many hands.
Every woman brings her own experience to the cooperative. Together, they keep a living practice moving forward.

Every pair of hands carries part of the story forward.
What TazRugs does
We help the connection travel further.
TazRugs grew from the Iznaguen Women’s Cooperative as a way to help its work reach customers beyond Taznakht while keeping the people behind each rug visible.
We also work with other women-led cooperatives in Morocco when a project calls for a different regional expertise. The women are paid directly for the work they do, with fair wages, and the right people remain recognised for their skill.
That is why a TazRugs commission is a conversation before it becomes a rug. Your space and direction meet the knowledge of the women who will make it.
Our work begins in southern Morocco, in the region where this weaving culture is lived.

Our work is also recognised through Artisanat du Maroc.
Each commission begins with one customer, one space and one considered conversation.
