About Our Custom Moroccan Rugs

A custom Moroccan rug from TazRugs is not a catalogue product with your name on it. It is a rug designed by you and handwoven from scratch by Amazigh women artisans at the Iznaguen Cooperative in Taznakht, Morocco — using the same natural Atlas Mountain wool, plant-based dyes, and centuries-old weaving techniques as every other piece in our collection. The only difference is that every single detail is chosen by you.

Every rug in our existing collections — from Beni Ourain rugs and Azilal rugs to Moroccan Kilim rugs, Taznakht rugs, and Moroccan runners — can be customised. Size, colour palette, pattern style, pile height, fringe length — you decide. Our master weavers, led by Sfia Iminetrass, will guide you through the process and ensure that your vision is translated faithfully into the finished piece. And if you cannot find what you are looking for anywhere in our full Moroccan rug collection — the size is wrong, the colour does not exist, the pattern only exists in your imagination — just contact us. If it can be woven, we can make it. No factories, no shortcuts, no synthetic materials. Just skilled hands, natural materials, and time.

What you can customise

When you order a custom berber rug from TazRugs, you have full control over the following:

Size — any dimensions you need, from small accent rugs to large room-sized pieces. We regularly produce rugs up to 3x4 metres and can go larger on request. Not sure which size fits your space? Our Moroccan rug size guide walks through every standard size and how to choose the right one for your room.

Colour — choose from our full range of natural plant-based dyes. Deep reds from madder root, rich blues from indigo, warm oranges from henna, earthy yellows from pomegranate rind, and natural undyed ivory and charcoal wool. We can match colours to your interior if you share reference images. Read more about why we use real wool and natural dyes instead of synthetic alternatives.

Pattern — choose a traditional Amazigh geometric pattern from our library, or work with our weavers to create something entirely new. Bold diamonds, zigzags, tribal motifs, minimal lines — anything is possible within the handweaving tradition. Each symbol carries meaning; learn more in our guide to Berber symbols and their meanings.

Construction — hand-knotted pile for a thick, soft, warm feel, or flatwoven kilim for a thinner, more graphic result. We will help you choose the right construction for your space and lifestyle. If you are unsure which suits you, our breakdown of kilim vs knotted Moroccan rugs explains the differences in detail.

Any rug that does not exist yet — do not limit yourself to what you see in our collections. If you have a vision for a rug that does not exist anywhere — a specific combination of colours, a pattern inspired by something personal, a size that no one stocks — bring it to us. Our weavers have the skill and experience to make it happen.

How the custom order process works

Getting a custom Moroccan rug made at TazRugs is simpler than you might expect. Start by contacting us with your requirements — size, colour, pattern ideas, and any reference images you have. We will come back to you within 48 hours with a quote, a timeline, and design suggestions from our weavers. Once you approve the design and confirm your order, our weavers begin work immediately. You will receive progress updates and photos throughout the weaving process. When the rug is complete, it is shipped directly from Taznakht to your door — anywhere in the world. For a complete walkthrough of every stage, read our step-by-step custom rug guide or the in-depth article on the custom Moroccan rug made-to-order process. You can also see how a Moroccan rug is made from start to finish.

How long does a custom rug take

Production time depends on the size and complexity of the rug. A small custom piece of around 120x180cm typically takes 2–3 weeks to complete. A large area rug of 200x300cm or more can take 4–8 weeks. We will give you an accurate timeline when you place your order, and we keep you informed throughout the process. Rush orders can sometimes be accommodated — contact us to discuss your timeline. Once your rug is ready, see our shipping and returns page for full delivery details.

How much does a custom Moroccan rug cost

Custom rugs are priced by size, materials, and complexity of the design. A small custom rug typically starts from a few hundred euros, while large hand-knotted pieces in natural dyes can reach several thousand. There are no hidden fees — your quote includes weaving, materials, and worldwide shipping. We send a transparent, itemised quote within 48 hours of your enquiry, and no work begins until you approve it. Are custom Moroccan rugs safe and authentic

Every custom rug we produce is woven with 100% natural Atlas Mountain wool, plant-based dyes, and a cotton or wool warp — no synthetic fibres, no chemical treatments, no glue-backed construction. This matters because not every rug sold as "Moroccan" online is what it claims to be. Why order a custom rug from TazRugs

Most stores that offer "custom" rugs are simply reselling factory products with minor variations. At TazRugs, custom means genuinely handmade to your specifications by skilled artisans working in a traditional cooperative. You are not choosing from a dropdown menu — you are commissioning a piece of functional art. Whether you want a custom Berber rug, a one-of-a-kind Taznakht rug, or something completely new, our weavers can make it. Browse our existing collection for inspiration, then contact us to start your custom order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I order a custom Moroccan rug?

Contact us directly through our contact page with your size, colour preferences, and any pattern ideas or reference images. We will respond within 48 hours with a personalised quote and design proposal. Once approved, your rug goes into production immediately at the Iznaguen Cooperative in Taznakht. The full process is laid out on our custom rug page.

Can I customise rugs from your existing collections?

Yes — every rug in our Beni Ourain, Azilal, Kilim, Taznakht, and runner rug collections can be reproduced in any size, colour, or pattern variation you want. Send us a link to the rug you like and tell us what you would change — we will quote it as a custom order.

What is the minimum size for a custom order?

We accept custom orders from 60x90cm upwards. There is no maximum size limit — we regularly produce large custom pieces of 3x4 metres and above. If you are unsure which dimensions suit your room, our Moroccan rug size guide covers every standard size in detail.

Can I see samples before ordering?

Yes — we can send wool colour samples before you commit to a custom order so you can see the exact shades of our natural dyes in person. We can also share photos and videos of similar completed pieces from the cooperative to help you visualise the finished result. Contact us to request samples.

Can I send my own design or inspiration photos?

Absolutely. Many of our customers send sketches, Pinterest boards, or photos of rugs they have seen elsewhere. Our weavers can interpret almost any design while keeping the authentic handwoven character of a Moroccan rug. We will review your reference and confirm what is possible before any work begins. Learn more about the symbolism behind traditional patterns in our guide to Berber symbols.

Can I match the colours to my interior?

Yes. Send us photos of your space, fabric swatches, or paint references, and we will match the wool colours as closely as our plant-based dyes allow. Because we use natural dyes such as madder root rather than synthetic ones, slight variation is part of the character of the rug — but we will get as close to your reference as possible.

Should I choose a knotted pile or a flatwoven kilim?

It depends on the look and feel you want. Knotted pile rugs are thick, soft, and warm — perfect for bedrooms and living rooms where you want comfort underfoot. Flatwoven kilims are thinner, more graphic, and easier to layer or use in high-traffic areas. Our full comparison of kilim vs knotted Moroccan rugs walks through every difference.

How do I know your custom rugs are authentic and safe?

Every custom rug is woven from 100% Atlas Mountain wool with plant-based dyes — no synthetics, no chemical backings, no glue. We send progress photos throughout the weaving so you can see your rug being made by hand. For background on what to watch out for elsewhere, read our guides on wool vs synthetic Moroccan rugs, whether Moroccan rugs are toxic, and the hidden dangers of mass-market Moroccan rugs.

Do you ship custom rugs worldwide?

Yes, we ship worldwide via DHL and FedEx Express. Shipping is included on all orders, and most rugs arrive within 5 to 10 business days after they leave Morocco. We handle the customs paperwork on our end so the process is smooth for you. See our shipping and returns page for full details.

Are custom rugs returnable?

Because every custom rug is handwoven specifically for you, custom orders are final sale and not returnable. This is why we send progress photos throughout the weaving process and confirm every detail before production starts — to make sure the finished piece is exactly what you wanted. Full terms are on our shipping and returns page.
