From reference to finished rug

A custom Moroccan rug can begin with something as simple as a photograph.

Four years ago, during a trip to Morocco, Eugene saw a rug he loved and took a photograph of it. Years later, that image became the starting point for a custom Moroccan rug made for his home.

Together we developed the proportions, wool colours, texture and finishing before the rug reached the loom.

01 · The reference

A photograph he had kept for four years.

The photograph Eugene had taken in Morocco became the starting point for the composition, palette and overall character of the rug.

From the beginning, we explained that a handmade rug would never be an exact reproduction. Small differences in line, proportion, colour placement and texture naturally appear during handweaving.

The reference would guide the design, while the finished piece would become a rug of its own.

02 · Custom dimensions

Adapting the composition to his space.

Because the original photograph was a visual reference rather than a technical drawing, the design needed to be adjusted so it remained balanced at the dimensions Eugene needed.

With a custom-size rug, the proportions can be developed around the room rather than restricted to a standard size. You can also begin with a design from our Design Library and adapt its dimensions, colours and texture.

03 · Commission confirmed

A simple two-part payment.

04 · Colour

Confirming the palette before weaving.

We selected the closest available wool colours to the reference and shared detailed photographs and videos so Eugene could review the actual shades before weaving began.

05 · Texture

Finding the texture closest to the original.

Eugene did not want the very soft, plush feel associated with a Mrirt rug. He preferred a dense, structured medium pile closer to the rug he had photographed.

We prepared a woven texture reference and shared photographs and videos before the full rug was started.

06 · The weaving

At the loom, the reference begins to become a rug of its own.

Once the colours and texture were confirmed, full-scale weaving began.

The rug was entrusted to Fadma, Fatima and Saida, who built the piece gradually, row by row and knot by knot.

Photographs and videos were shared throughout the process so Eugene could follow the rug as it developed. You can also explore how Moroccan rugs are made from wool to finished weave .

07 · Progress from the loom

Watching the rug develop.

Instead of waiting until the end, Eugene could follow the piece through regular progress photographs and videos.

08 · Finishing

The weaving was finished. The work wasn't.

After leaving the loom, the rug was washed, dried and carefully finished. Eugene chose twisted fringes of approximately 10 cm on both sides.

The surface, reverse, dimensions, edges and finishing details were checked before the rug was presented for approval.

09 · The finished rug

From a photograph in Morocco to a rug of his own.

The reference remained recognizable, while the natural variations of handweaving gave the completed piece its own character.

10 · Final approval

He saw the finished rug before it left Morocco.

Detailed photographs and videos of the completed piece were sent to Eugene so he could review the colours, texture and finishing.

After he approved the rug, the remaining 50% was paid. We then prepared it for dispatch and shared the tracking code for its journey to Bulgaria.

11 · At home

In the home it was made for.

Four years after Eugene photographed a rug during his trip to Morocco, that memory had become a new hand-knotted piece made specifically for his home.

From photograph to wool, from loom to finishing, and finally from Morocco to Bulgaria.

Custom Moroccan rugs

Common questions.

Can you make a custom Moroccan rug from a photograph?

Yes. A photograph can be used as the starting direction for a custom rug. Because the piece is woven by hand, the result will naturally include small variations rather than being an exact machine reproduction.

Can I choose a custom size?

Yes. The rug dimensions can be developed around your room and the proportions of the design. You can also browse our made-to-order rug designs for a starting point.

Can I choose the colours and texture?

Yes. Wool colours are shared for confirmation, and pile height, density and texture can be discussed before production begins.

Will I see my rug while it is being woven?

Yes. Progress photographs and videos are shared so you can follow the rug as it develops on the loom.

How does payment work?

A 50% deposit confirms the commission. The remaining 50% is paid after you have seen and approved the completed rug and before dispatch.

How long does a custom Moroccan rug take?

Most made-to-order TazRugs commissions take approximately 6–13 weeks depending on size, technique, pile and design complexity.
